AI’s Godfather leaves Google 👋🤖

Did you hear? Geoffrey Hinton, the Godfather of A.I. himself, has just quit Google and that too not for sipping Pina Coladas at the beach but to raise the alarm on the dangers of A.I.

If you work even remotely with A.I. development, you must know that our man Geoff Hinton is the real OG when it comes to anything and everything A.I.

Bear with us as we fanboy over Hinton and nerd-out by detailing his contributions to the field of Artificial Intelligence.

From his days as a grad student, Hinton passionately pursued the idea of neural networks, defying skeptics and shaping the world of A.I. as we know it.

He proposed and popularized the idea of backpropagation (which powers all modern AI algorithms) way back in 1986 in this amazing paper.

Fast forward to 2012, and Hinton and his students at the University of Toronto created “AlexNet” that many call as the beginning of the modern AI era and Hinton’s “Annus Mirabilis” if you will.

P.S. Geoff Hinton is George and Mary Boole’s great great grandson! The Booles responsible for Boolean Algebra! Guess, intelligence does flow in the genes!

Having spent a lifetime laying the groundwork for artificial intelligence, he's now having second thoughts about what lies ahead.

As companies race to develop more advanced A.I., Hinton warns of a dark and stormy future. Picture an internet awash with fake photos, videos, and text, where truth is a luxury.

Hinton's got some serious concerns, but can we put the genie back in the bottle? As tech giants compete in this high-stakes A.I. race, will they listen to the ominous words of their own godfather?

Which outcome is actually going to be the reality?

ChatGPT Schooling Chegg 📓✏️

Cheg (the company that helps you score an A+ on your assignment without you not having a single clue of what the questions even mean) released their earnings yesterday and their score card doesn’t appear to be good.

Their revenue, which reached $202.2 million a year ago, shrank to $187.6 million this quarter.

What about their subscription revenue and total subscribers? More like a double whammy of ouch!

A 3% drop in subscription service revenues and a 5% dip in subscriber count didn't make the wolfs much happy.

Wall Street was so unhappy with these numbers and future predictions that CHGG was down a staggering 37.84%!

Q2 projections ain't pretty either! Chegg's looking at total net revenues between $175M-$178M, waaay off from the $193.65M analysts were hoping for.

CEO Dan Rosensweig revealed that since March, ChatGPT has been the hottest tutor in town causing Chegg to feel the heat.

Students are fancying letting ChatGPT do their homework instead of relying on Chegg’s actual teachers. What a great world we live in!

Here all are the numbers you need to know for CHGG:

  1. Total Revenue: $187.6 Million (-7%)

  2. Net Income: $2.2 Million

  3. Subscription Revenue: $168.4 Million (-3%)

  4. Subscription Subscribers: 5.1 Million (-5%)

Chegg however is partnering with OpenAI to create CheggMate, fusing ChatGPT's brainpower with Chegg's expertise in an effort to stay relevant in the bizz.

We guess they’re going with the old saying: If you can't beat them, join them!

☄️ Asteroids ☄️

The UK's "crown jewel" of tech, Arm, is setting its sights on a colossal US stock market debut, potentially raking in $10bn, while the London Stock Exchange is left swiping left on their tech Tinder. As Arm plans its NASDAQ soirée, the UK frets about its tech market's attractiveness, and Softbank eagerly awaits a much-needed win.

Amazon is spicing up its free streaming service, Freevee, with a taste of Prime Video originals like hors d'oeuvres at a fancy party. With over 100 titles planned for this year, Freevee users can nibble on episodes and seasons, then decide whether to dive into the ad-free banquet that is Prime Video.
