Waymo has Way More Miles 🚘️

The road to making an AV is filled with bumps and crashes. Puns intended

Just look at Uber and GM, whose self-driving projects caused them problems. Or Apple, who slammed the brakes on their AV project.

But amidst the smoke, drifting out of the chaos, is Waymo. Google's self-driving project turned Alphabet spin-off, is cruising ahead smoothly.

With 50,000 paid rides weekly on their fully autonomous rideshare services, it’s a testament to their patient, methodical approach.

Waymo’s slow and steady strategy has kept it ahead, especially compared to rivals like Uber, which exited the scene after a fatal accident, and Cruise, which faced regulatory setbacks after an incident in San Francisco.

Despite a few bumps, such as software recalls and minor crashes, Waymo’s safety record remains relatively clean. This cautious approach, backed by Google’s financial muscle, has allowed Waymo to expand responsibly, without the frantic pace that led others astray.

According to reports filed with California’s DMV, autonomous vehicles racked up nearly 5.7M miles of driving last year. The vast majority, 5.1M or so, were done with a safety driver present, in case of the need to intervene.

Cruise managed the second most miles, but it was Waymo, the self-driving arm of Google (Alphabet), that reported the most mileage in its report: an astonishing 2.9M miles.

Waymo’s use of AI has grown, allowing their system to adapt to new environments quickly. They’re not in a rush to conquer new cities but focus on refining their service where they already operate. You know what they say, QUALITY over quantity!

OpenAI's recent hack was less "SkyNet" and more "whispered gossip," with hackers only accessing an employee forum. But, it’s a cosmic reminder: AI firms hold super valuable data—juicy targets for hackers. 🌌🔐

Figma CEO Dylan Field said the company will temporarily disable its “Make Design” AI feature after it was accused of “heavily” training the tool on existing apps. ❌🎨
